Music to Our Ears: March is Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM)!

Piera Leone is BVP's Music Director. She also teaches at Elementary School 1.

Across our nation, March is Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM).  Fortunately, Blackstone Valley Prep (BVP) scholars enjoy music in our schools every month!   BVP values the importance of music education in all of our schools, always.

I recently received a brochure booklet from the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) called “Music Broader Minded, Think beyond the Bubbles.”   It not only supports music’s role in academic success, but also argues that music has its own inherent benefits for students and builds 21st century skills in its own right.  You can learn more here.

We at BVP have always believed that music can help scholars not only academically, but also in the areas of emotional awareness, reflective learning, process orientation, decision-making, grit, creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking!

Scholars at our two elementary schools and middle school have music multiple times a week starting at the beginning of the school year.  Throughout the school year, they have multiple opportunities to perform.  We have had many performances that included our own school concerts, performances at the RI Statehouse, nursing homes in various communities, the Town of Cumberland's Winter Wonderland, and even on the ice at the Dunkin Donuts Center! Our schools also currently have several ensembles: Recorder Ensemble, Elementary & Middle School Chorus, Elementary and Middle School Strings, and even a Middle School Bucket Band!

To celebrate MIOSM at BVP, some schools will have “Music to Munch By,” which means scholars’ ears will be filled with music while they munch on their breakfast or lunch!  The Middle School Bucket Band will also perform at some of our elementary schools' Town Halls. Some of our chorus ensembles will sing songs given to us for free from NAfME to participate in “The Concert for MIOSM.” Be sure to support BVP by watching the performances online!

Thank you for your continued support in sharing the importance of music education in ALL schools.  Your help brings us one step closer to achieving our vision, which is to create a world-class music program that truly supports our scholars' journey on their path to success in college and the world beyond. My dream is to have many-- if not all-- schools follow our lead!  Don’t forget to follow me on twitter to get updates on our music program.  Keep checking for any BVP music projects that can use help being completed! Lastly, please always encourage music practice at home, no matter what the instrument.

I look forward to celebrating MIOSM with you throughout the month of March!
